Smart meter gateways allow energy consumption to be recorded and processed in near real time. This is advantageous for efficient energy use and can also reduce dependence on fossil fuels more quickly and ensure stable grid operation with a high share of renewables.

Depending on the model, smart meters can also transmit data to the energy supply company at a fast rhythm, which should enable the company to better control the grid and resources.

The customer can also view and read out further current and logged values, if necessary.

Actually underway for a long time, the planning of the smart meter rollout was halted by the courts.
